API 570 EXAM STUDY GUIDE
MODULE 9 : PART 5
ASME B31.3 : PROCESS PIPING
Continuation from previous blog,
S = Stress value for material.
'S' from Table A-1 or Table A-1M
SI units are given in Table A-1M, in that Stress is given in MPa for temperatures in degrees Celsius.
The second table given here is a continuation of first table in terms of rows.
Example : Line 10 : A106 Grade A:
From first table:
- P no: 1
- Min. Temp in Degree Celsius : Cure B in Figure 323.2.2A(This we will discuss)
- Minimum tensile strength : 331MPa
- Minimum Yield Strength : 207MPa
- Max. use temperature : 593 Deg. C
From Second Table Corresponding to Line 10, stress values at different temperatures can be obtained.
Question and Answers:
Question: 1
A straight pipe is made of ASTM A106 Gr B material and the design temperature is 300 Deg.C. What will be the basic allowable stress in tension?
Answer:
In Table A-1M, ASTM A106 Gr B material is in Row number 31.
So the stress value is 126MPa
Question: 2
A straight pipe is made of ASTM A106 Gr B material and the design temperature is 600 Deg.C. What will be the basic allowable stress in tension?
Answer:
In Table A-1M, ASTM A106 Gr B material is in Row number 31.
ASTM A106 Gr B can be used maximum up to a temperature of 593Deg C only as per the table.
