HYDROTEST [PART - 2]

HYDROTEST

(PIPING HYDROTEST)

Please read HYDROTEST PART 1

What are all required for doing the hydrotest?

1. The water of required quality and quantity.
2. Arrangement for water filling/water filling pump.
3. Arrangement for pressurizing / a positive discharge pump.
4. Hose for water filling and pressurizing.
5. Suitable arrangement for controlling and monitoring pressure (Pressure gauge/pressure recorder)
6. Suitable spanners and other tools.
7. Gasket for tightening of flanges.

What are the preparatory activities for hydrotest?

The tightening of all the flanges with a proper gasket is to be ensured. The water filling pump is connected to the pipe system preferably on the low point drain (All the pipe system will normally have high point vents and low point drains) through a suitable hose and other arrangements. The high point vent is kept open for the escape of air.

1. Tightening of all flanges.
2. Isolating equipment, instruments and special items if needed.
3. Sealing the test limit.
4. Barricading, caution signs and work permit.
5. Scaffolding arrangements at the locations of flanges for bolt tightening.

when all the preparatory activities are completed, water filling will be started through the low point inlet. For small bore lines water filling to be done at a small flow rate. This is to allow time for the escape of air. For big bore piping, high filling rates are acceptable. All the high point vents are to be opened at the time of water filling. Water to be filled till the water comes out of the high point vent.

AIRLOCK
Airlock locations are to be envisaged and as far as possible it is to be avoided. To envisage the airlock, there should have a clear concept of water flow.

If you have a clear concept of hydrostatic paradox, airlocking can be avoided. Pipe may have branches of different diameters, but water gets filled to the same level if the pipes are at same elevation. The normal misconception is that small diameter pipe will gets filled fast than the big one.
