BIS Codes (INDIAN CODES AND STANDARDS) [1]

This series is to familiarise you with the most common codes and standards used in construction industry developed by Bureau Of Indian Standards (BIS). BIS is also known as IS codes & standards/ Indian codes and standards.

There are many codes / Standards developed and in use of BIS. We will discuss some codes/ Standards which are very common and required to known to a mechanical construction engineer.

IS:800  - General Construction In Steel – Code of Practice

IS 800 is the basic code for general construction in steel structures using hot rolled steel sections joined using riveting, bolting and welding and is the prime document for any structural design and has influence on many other codes governing the design of other special steel structures, such as towers, bridges, silos, chimneys, etc.

Fabrication and erection requirements covered in this standard are general and the minimum necessary quality if material and workmanship consistent with assumptions in the design rules.

This standard is referred for design and basic requirements in fabrication and erection.

IS808: Dimensions for hot rolled steel beam, column, channel and angle sections.

If you are using structural materials made based on BIS, you will refer this code for the dimensions, weights and other sectional properties of those materials. The site engineer will refer this code for the unit weight of structural items.

(It is a common practice that weights and dimensions of materials are taken and used for commercial purposes from unknown sources, which are available through internet. That is to be avoided. Please ensure that all the official documentations are made referring to standard and authorised documents)

ISMB, ISMC, ISA are some of the most common structural items used in the construction industry.
