REDUCER
(PROCESS PIPING)


Reducer is a piping component which are used in piping for converge or diverge a flow.



There are two types of Reducer's.
A. Eccentric Reducer
B. Concentric Reducer


HORIZONTAL: ECCENTRIC REDUCER
VERTICAL: CONCENTRIC REDUCER

VERTICAL: CONCENTRIC REDUCER
HORIZONTAL: ECCENTRIC REDUCER




The difference between the two can be easily understood from the above photos.


SWAGE:
Swage is also reducer and is available in concentric and eccentric form but is called swage when the size of the big diameter is less than or equal to 1.5".


Explaining a concentric and eccentric reducer is easy.



Concentric Reducer : - The center line of the bigger diameter side and smaller diameter side are in same line. 



Eccentric Reducer : - The center line of bigger diameter side and smaller diameter side do not intersect and both will be parallel to each other.


As to many other fittings the reducers are available in plain end, bevelled end etc. Swage are available with one end or both end threaded or plain ( for socket welding)


Usage of reducers
Reducers are used to converge or diverge a flow. But the applications differ according to conditions of the piping.



Eccentric reducer's are used when the bottom line of the pipe is to be maintained at the same level. For example in rack piping.


In the inlet of pump eccentric reducer's are used , this is to avoid turbulent flow in the inlet.


Concentric reducers are used where laminar/smooth flow is needed at the reduction area also. In vertical lines mainly concentric reducers are used.

    1. Thank you for reading my blog. ASME Sec IX welding_training, till part 17 the core topics are covered.Balance portion of the WPS contains recording of the observed parameters. So to my observation, normally those parts are simple and does not make any confusion to the code user. There was Planning to write the balance parts of that series, but dropped due to its simplicity. I will rethink of writing it. Once again thank you for reading my blog.
