API 570 EXAM STUDY GUIDE

API 571 STUDY GUIDE

API 571: Damage mechanisms affecting fixed equipment in the refining industry.

(For 2019 Exam, API RP 571 Second Edition, April 2011)

Please note that only fixed equipment damage mechanisms are addressed in this code.

As you go through API RP 571, you can see that there are no tables (As per BOK) to refer and calculations to be made. So the questions from this can be mainly expected in the Closed Book Exam.

Though the code is a very big one,  only 15 mechanisms are to be studied. Please refer the relevant BOK for the same.

The mechanisms are,

Sl.
NO
Main Clause
Sub Clause

4.2  Mechanical and Metallurgical Failure Mechanisms
4.2.14   Erosion/Erosion -- Corrosion
4.2.16   Mechanical Fatigue

5.1.1   Uniform or Localized Loss in Thickness Phenomena
5.1.1.4   Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) Corrosion
5.1.1.10  Sour Water Corrosion (Acidic)
6
Refinery Industry Damage Mechanism
5.1.2  General: Environment-Assisted Cracking
5.1.2.2  Amine Stress Corrosion Cracking

Therw are 6 main mechanisms and they are further divided to many.
-----6 main mechanisms
--------- 15 sub mechanisms

Sl. No. : 1 to 4 are damage mechanisms  that are common to a variety of industries including refining and petrochemical, pulp and paper and fossil utility.

Sl.No.: 5 to 6 are damage mechanisms found in the refining environment.

In addition to these 15 mechanisms section 3: Definitions are also part of the exam.

We will read each mechanism and answer the questions relate to the mechanism.
This approach will give an easy memory of the facts.

Summing-up

API 571 (from the exam point of view) is divided in to two parts
1. Damage mechanisms common to related industries
2. Damage mechanisms in refining environment

Damage mechanisms common to industries are further divided in to four
1. Mechanical and metallurgical failure (2 damage mechanisms)
2. Uniform or localised loss of thickness (7 damage mechanisms)
3. High temperature corrosion (1 damage mechanism)
4. Environment assisted cracking (2 damage mechanism)

Damage mechanisms in refining environment are further divided in to two
1. Uniform or localised loss of thickness (2 mechanism)
2. Environment assisted cracking (1 mechanism)

Before going to the next blog on this series,  thoroughly read each damage mechanism and note down the points which are important from your point of view.
