API 570 EXAM STUDY GUIDE
TRAINING SERIES
API 570 is a piping inspection code.
So this certification examination from American Petroleum Institute
(API)-Individual Certification Programs (ICP) is focusing on piping
inspections.
This
course contains closed book and open book examinations. At present this
course syllabus have 9 different documents from API and ASME. At the end
of every year API will publish the course content for the next year.
The course content is split in to two.
1. API 570 Exam Publications Effectivity Sheet
2. API 570 Body of Knowledge (BOK)
First of all we have to refer these two documents which are
available on API website.
API 570 - PIPING INSPECTOR
This series is based on the BOK for June 2020 to October 2020 exams. Before starting to study for this examination, you have to refer the latest of BOK
and Exam Publications Effectivity Sheet.
The BOK of 2020 contains the following.
1. API 570
2. API RP 571
3. API RP 574
4. API RP 577
5. API RP 578
6. ASME BPVC SECTION V
7. ASME BPVC SECTION IX
8. ASME B 16.5
9. ASME B31.3
Seeing the list we feel that the content is huge. But the
BOK further explains the required knowledge which is tested on the course in
each of these documents.
The exam approach strategy followed in this blog as below. Each code is numbered as one
module and the posts are numbered as Part 1, Part 2, Part 3... etc. The release status of each Module/Part can be easily found from the index page.

MODULE 10 : MODEL EXAMS
Approach methodology followed here.
We will go through page-wise or clause wise, as convenient, of each document and will try to
answer the questions of the corresponding portions. To my
opinion, this will give clarity of the topic and will give us an idea of the
type of questions from each portion.
There will be two phases for the exams, the closed book, and the
open book. So we
have to remember the answers which may have chances to be in a closed book
exam.
For open book exam answers (mainly referring tables and doing calculations), we
should have the clarity of approach for the answers and 'what lies where' and in
which document. So each of the questions in the question paper has to be first
identified as from which document and then in which portion of that document.
Some codes or some areas of the codes can be expected on an open book exam and
some others can be expected on the closed book exam. Though there is no hard
and fast rule, the common man logic is applied in this approach.
For example, referring tables and calculations will mostly be in
the open book exam. These approaches are developed by the author and not to be
considered as the policy or approach of official API course or exam.
As you are aware, the codes cannot be displayed here. You should buy or should have the codes before going through this series. Notes are made on the perspective of author and does not guarantee that those are the only important portions for the exam. Questions can be asked from any portion based on BOK. Read the code portion thoroughly before starting the reading of the relevant portion of the blog.
Please feel free to ask questions on the comments section or through Facebook page.
