NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING - PT
Everybody will say that the easiest NDT method is Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT). It is seen that even a newbie in the industry will say that "DP? it's so easy". Many times the defects go unnoticed because of this 'easiness' in this method.
Is DP an easy one?
Yes, it is easy to apply. But discontinuity detection and assessment is a difficult task. When DP is applied the excess penetrant cleaning is considered as a 'not so important' activity and most of the time the defect go unnoticed in those excess penetrant's. Welds in as weld state have so many ripples and cleaning off excess penetrant is a laborious job. Those who genuinely do that process can identify discontinuities if it's there.
As specified by ASNT, integrity is one of the core competencies what is needed for an examiner. Training and certification is a process to build a career. Those who are interested and ready to work hard with integrity only can do a good job, with them only we can expect a result with any NDT method.
Below is a pinhole identified when doing a DP of the nearby weld joint, which was unnoticed by the examiner but caught in the eyes of an experienced inspector.
Pinhole in a socket weld tee of 1.5" diameter is given below.
