ASME BPVC SECTION IX WELDING_TRAINING - PART 13

How to Prepare a pWPS?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example situation for filling pWPS. CASE 1

We have to weld a pipe to pipe joint using GTAW welding. The material of the pipe is SA106 Gr B, 2" X Sch 40. Prepare the pWPS (Proposed Welding Procedure Specification) for the same.

(26) Thickness range:

Base metal: Groove…..

Here we have again go back to ASME BPVC Sec IX for having the idea of ranges a WPS qualifies.

As discussed previously we are discussing about WPS so we have to refer Article II. Refer Table QW-256; QW-403; Base materials.

In the table, “T qualified” is in QW-403.8

Refer QW-403.8 in Article 4;

“A change in base metal thickness beyond the range qualified in QW-451, except as otherwise…..”

Refer QW-451; Procedure Qualification thickness limits and test specimens.
Our pipe is 2” Sch 40 thkickness is 3.91mm

Refer the table headings; ‘T’ for base material thickness; ‘t’ for weld metal thickness.

Range of metal qualified as per the table (Refer the data above the red line)
Min. base metal qualified: 1.5mm
Max base metal qualified (2T): 7.82mm

Deposited weld metal thickness is 2t: 7.82mm
't' - is 3.91 that is the entire thickness is welded with one process; GTAW.
