In the construction industry (in all industries the permit system will be there), before starting any work, we have to get necessary permits for working. These are called work permits.
The work permit is a signed tri party agreement. The originator ( mainly the client process department or client project department), the safety department of client and the contractor or workmen who is executing the job.
The different permits will have different colour papers to identify the permit.
Each permit is made in triplicate. The original written permit will be with the contractor or workmen and the copies each one with safety department and the originator.
The different permits that are used in construction sites are
- Hot work permit
- Cold work permit
- Height work permit
- Confined space permit
- Excavation permit
- Radiography permit
- Electrical work permit
- Electrical isolation permit
- Electrical energisation permit
Each permit contains the basic details of the work such as area and location of work, works that are going to be executed, time duration of work, number of persons in the work area, safety precautions that needed to be taken in the work area, PPE’s that are to be used, emergency contact numbers, sign & details of the supervisor for the work and sign & contact details of safety department and originator.
After completion of the work or the permitted duration of the work, the permit is to be retuned to the originator with the work done, cleanliness of the area and with other necessary details. If any further work is to be done, time duration of the permit is to be extended by the originator and approved by safety department and the contractor should accept it with his signature on the permit.
A permit system is to be strictly followed whether the work is of one minute or of one day.
Good work practices will create good and safe working environment.
