CHAPTER 2

SAFE PRACTICES FOR WELDING INSPECTORS

Notes:

1. Z49.1, Safety in Welding, Cutting, and Allied Processes.

2. The most important component of an effective safety and health program is leadership support and direction from Management.

3. Through and effective training is a key aspect of a safety program

4. OSHA-Occupational Safety and Health Act

5. Fume Plume - This is a smoke like cloud containing minute solid particles arising directly from the area of melting metal.

6. MSDS: Material Safety Data Sheet

7. TLV: Threshold Limit Value

8. TLV is a registered trade mark of ACGIH

9. ACGIH: American Conference of Government and Industrial Hygienists.

10. Employers are responsible for employee hazardous material training.

11. Good housekeeping is also essential to avoid injuries.

12. Where arc welding or cutting is regularly performed next to painted walls, the walls should be painted with a finish having low reflectivity of ultraviolet radiation.

13. Many fires are started by Sparks, which can travel horizontally up to 35ft from their source.

14. Floors around the work area should be free of combustible materials for a radius of 35ft.

15. Fire inspection should be continued for at least 30 minutes after the operation is completed.

16. A fire watch person is needed for inspection  of fire.

17. When welding, cutting or similar hot working operations are to be performed in areas not normally assigned for such operations, a "hot work permit" system should be used.

18. Shielded metal arc welding suggested lens shade for eye protection is from shade nos 10 to 14.

19. Oxyfuel Gas Welding  (OFW) the shades are 4 to 5 for light process.

20. Woollen clothing is preferable to cotton because it is not so easily ignited.

21. Cotton clothing should be chemically treated to reduce its combustibility.

22. When repairing the machinery must be disconnected, locked out, tried and tagged to prevent inadvertent operation and injury.

23. Protection from excess exposure of fumes and gases is usually accomplished by ventilation.

24. The welders head to be protected from fumes plume

25. Paints containing Lead or Cadmium generate dangerous fumes during welding and cutting.
