WELDER TRAINING - Part [1]

WELDER TRAINING

Welders are the back-born of any mechanical construction industry. They are to be perfectly trained for the job. A perfectly trained individual is really an asset for any organisation.

Most of the projects are to be completed in 12-24 months time, which was previously done in 4-5 years. We need more output per day to keep pace of the schedule. More welders are needed for more output.

The training of welders (new welders) will develop a new stream, thus the manpower availability will increase.

Training Centres

The traditional concept of training under a senior welder (working as a helper to him) and becoming a good welder is a long term process. The senior welders will not teach all the secrets of the trade and if so it will be after training under him for 4-5 years.

We have to train new welders for this trade and give them opportunities so that they can be good welders. This can be done through implementing training centres for training.

How many organisations are supporting the process of welder training, particularly new welders?

The concept and importance of welder training and development was well understood and implemented in the JERP (Jamnagar Refinery Expansion Project of M/s.Reliance Industries Ltd). M/s.Reliance had a training centre, each contractor can send their good new welders for training and qualification as a welder.

Most of the organisations are reluctant for welder training because they consider it as a waste of money and resources. They will hire welders for higher rates from outside their organisation, without considering that in-house development of new welders can be done.

There are many institutions in the country for teaching the welding trade. The unlucky part is that they are training the welders for passing the exam, not for mastering the trade. A welder becomes a welder when his hand becomes steady in the process of welding, for that the only way is to weld as many job as possible.

It is better to keep welder training as a contractual obligation, so that all the organisations will develop training centres and new welders will be 'born'.
