LINE HISTORY SHEET (LHS) - PIPING - [3]

A isometric line number system is given below.

2" - P - 334143 - A1A - IH

What you can understand from this?

(This line numbering system is of M/s.Engineers India Ltd, used in one of their project)

2" - P - 334143 - A1A - IH :
The red coloured 2" is the main line size of that line.

2" - P - 334143 - A1A - IH
The red coloured "P" represents this is a process line. Some times this contains the fluid handled by that line. For example: DW - Drinking Water, PW - Process Water, HO - Hot Oil etc.

2" - P - 334143 - A1A - IH
The red coloured "334143" is line number. This may contain other information like, the area where the pipe comes is "334" and the number of the line is "143" etc.

2" - P - 334143 - A1A - IH
The redcolour "A1A" represents the grouping of the piping done based on material, pressure, temperature etc.

2" - P - 334143 - A1A - IH
The red colour "IH" represents insulation  - Hot. Similarly there will be IP which means Insulation for personnel protection etc.

The above example and explanation is given to make you familiar and amke you understand that there is a 'Meaning' for the line numbering system. In all project specifications that will be clearly defined. Every piping engineer should thoroughly understand the piping numbering concept.

Now we will go the part of LHS sheet prepration.

First coloumn will be Serial number. This is not required.

Second Column:
From second column we will start entering the line number. Here in the example the line number starts with the line size so the first column is Main line size.

Use: In many cases there will be some material availability with us and we want to track which all are the lines we can fabricate using that. By filtering the size of the available materials, from LHS, we can understand the possible lines that we can fabricate with the available materials.

Third Column:
It will contain the fluid handled in the line as given the line numbering system.

Use: There are many instances that client requires some particular lines to be completed first - Process wise. In that case filtering of the column containing fluid handled will be helpful for that.

Forth column:
It will contain the line number. As here in this example it contains the area code also we can split that in to two column. That is the forth column contains the area code and the fifth column contains the line number.

Use: To filter and see area and lines

Sixth Column:
It contains the grouping of the piping class. Normally grouping is done for standardizing NDT requirements, inspection requirements etc.

Use: To filter and see whether NDT requirements are cleared for a group this will be helpful.

Seventh Column:
It contains the insulation requirements of the line.

Use: Front generation is one of the prime tasks of a project as there will be different groups for different tasks. For generating the front for the insulation team, may be those lines are to be fabricated first. This can be easily identified by using the filtering of seventh column.

Now we have entered all the data in the line number in different columns in excel sheet. There will be other information's in a isometric drawing. Those informations are also to be entered.

In the next series we will discuss that in detail.
