INTRODUCTION
Scope of this series of blog: The intent of this series is to make the site engineer familiar with the sections of the ASME B31.3: Process Piping. The portions which, in normal cases, used by a site engineer are explained in detail in this series.
---------------------
The ASME B31
code is for pressure piping. It is divided in to different sections depends on
the application.
ASME B31.1 : Power piping
ASME B31.3 : Process Piping
ASME B31.4 : Pipeline Transportation Systems for Liquid Hydrocarbons and Other Liquids
ASME B31.5 : Refrigeration Piping
ASME B31.8 : Gas Transportation and Distribution Piping Systems
ASME B31.9 : Building Services Piping
ASME B31.11 : Slurry Transportation Piping Systems
For a particular design of a piping system, it is the responsibility of the owner, to decide which code/combination of codes is to be used.
There are 9 chapters for this code
Chapter 1 : Scope and definitions
Chapter 2 : Design
Chapter 3 : Material
Chapter 4 : Standards for piping components
Chapter 5 : Fabrication, Assembly and Erection
Chapter 6 : Inspection, Examination and Testing
Chapter 7 : Nonmetallic Piping and Piping Lined With Nonmetals
Chapter 8 : Piping for Category M Fluid Service
Chapter 9 : High Pressure Piping
In the next blog related to this topic we will discuss about each chapters in detail and their related importance in a site engineer point of view.
